Exploring Surakarta with Karsa CityLab

Contextual urban development practices were explored alongside representatives from Georgetown University and Urun Daya Kota at Surakarta. The series of visits showcased how space, creative activity, and community involvement all work together in shaping urban dynamics and creating an inclusive and resilient city.

Through the Lokananta exhibition, the public can easily see the city’s ongoing cultural preservation practices. Creative economy is increasing in relevance as one of the driving forces of urban development, just as discussed with Jacob Gatot Sura which focused on spatial management and its utilization as a public space supporting community activity and the creative environment of a city.

These experiences strengthen the discussion with Respati Ardi as the Mayor of Surakarta which encompassed area development, participative approach, and the challenges in policy delivery on a city scale. The lesson opens space to view city development as an integrated process, involving various actors, scale, and approach, in a continuously evolving ecosystem.
